My first job following graduation in 1946 was with The Associated Press in Raleigh, covering the Senate of the 1947 General Assembly. However, I was not scheduled to report for duty until January 1, 1947, so I filled the intervening six months returning to my previous summer job: editing the Southern Pines Pilot (NC)for Mrs. James Boyd. She was attending an international conference in Englnd (I believe).
The Associated Presss was a most demanding master. When I was invited back to campus to speak to a news reporting class, my message (as reported to me many years later by Roland Giduz) was "Learn everything you can about everything you can because you'll need it." Incidentally, after visiting a vastly different N.C. legislature in March, I think that advice still holds true.
