Default Campus Dining

Today’s student diners have a plethora of on-campus options, from all-they-can-eat food halls serving up several cuisines, to chain and independent fast-food stalls. What were the food options during your days at Carolina? Did you fill up on mystery burgers in the Student Union, get your fill of pancakes in the Pine Room or chow down at Chase Cafeteria?

Talking

I have one indelible memory of campus dining. A message scrawled in a Mangum Hall bathroom stall that read "flush twice -- it's a long way to the Pine Room".

Thumbs up Bob Newsome BSBA Class of 1965

I have fond memories of my dining experiences at UNC. I remember the good old "Student Special" at Lenoir Hall which knocked me back $.40! After I went to work in the Pine Room(5-7 a.m. shift) I got paid in meal tickets which I could use for that student special. I learned to like(and still do) the breakfast of liver pudding, two eggs, grits, toast and coffee. Mr. Prillaman did a darn good job with Lenoir Hall. I also enjoyed several spaghetti dinners as well as hot dogs in the Pine Room. I met my wife when we were fellow employees so, needless to say, that place has special memories. During my senior year the wife worked in Ehringhaus where the jocks were fed so I occasionally got a super meal!

Smile Dining on Campus 1963-67 was interesting

I still remember the 35-40 cent student specials at Lenoir and was able to eat 3 complete (and good meals) a day for $1.00. The Circus Room was a great snack spot, especially the ice cream. And, of course, the Y-Court was the main between class place. There really were not a lot of choices but we didn't know any better back then and most of us were pretty satisfied. Sutton's Drug Store was a great off campus treat (and still is) for breakfast, hot dogs, burgers and fries - and therte was only a counter and one booth as I recall. The popular off campus spots included the Porthole (remember the hot rolls!), Brady's for Fried Chicken, the ZOOM-ZOOM for pasta, and the Rat for pizza and the Gambler.
